How to Pick Clear Quartz Crystal

Note the color of the glass. The clear quartz has small inclusions that look like a stain on the glass, but in general, the glass should be colorless and transparent. Although sometimes what you need is the natural quartz, you should know exactly pick the one you need.

Inspect the form of crystals for DIY cheap jewelry. Quartz crystals are generally hexagonal prisms terminated at each end with a six-sided pyramid. All glass can not be perfect, depending on the manner in which the formed quartz. The sample may be only the barrel of the prism and a pyramid or end pyramid may appear to have only three sides.

As key chain clasp will scratch the surface of the glass with a cutter to test the hardness. Quartz is harder than the blade. Therefore, you should not see a scratch on the glass surface.

Rub the glass in a plate made to verify the presence of a band and color. Color streak is a mineral powder. Quartz strip of white or colorless. Streak plates are approximately the same hardness as quartz, so you may see a white line or simply scratch with little or no color.

Break the glass with a hammer to test cleavage and fracture. Quartz crystals have a good division, which is the ability of the glass to break along flat planes of weakness within the structure. Fractures rock crystal, however, shows a rough surface over the holidays. Often, fracture exhibits a turbulence model, also known as conchoidal fracture.
