Function
In
modern Western culture, nose jewelry is mainly used for appearance, to
accentuate the natural appearance of an individual. Many people see jewelry as
elegant, for example, the size of hoops and tacks are often smaller than their
counterparts in the ears or other areas. Rings, like lip
hoop rings, on the nose is more prevalent in women.
Characteristics
There
are three main areas in which they are used for nose jewelry. The most common
nose piercing is when a hole is placed in the right or left nostril to allow a
piece of jewelry to wear. Piercing bridge are piercing through the skin on the
top of the nose between the eyes. Septum piercing or sands as they are sometimes
called, are a traditional form of piercing where the skin is pierced in the
base wall of the nasal septum that separates the two sides of the nose with the
fake nose ring.
Types
A
circular rocker arm resembles the shape of a horseshoe and has two small
spheres or other shapes at the ends so that it can be passed through a
perforation.
A
curved bar is a long strip of metal, slightly curved to allow easy placement on
a piercing. Again, two small beads are placed on the ends of the thread. This
is more common in a bridge drill.
Captive
ball rings are circular rings that contain a small bead with recesses that
allow it to be placed in the opening between the ring, creating a full circle.
This is the most common piece of jewelry by the nose.
The
pin is more common among women as it allows a jewel for prominent nose
decoration. A stallion is a small piece of metal that is inside the ring of the
nose so it is less noticeable like a bar or a ring.
Warning
Nose
piercing should only be performed by a professional piercer body. Infection can
occur, as is common with bridge perforation, if not cleaned and sterile
conditions are not maintained.
All piercings should be inserted immediately and need one to three
months to heal.
