1 Observe the metal. Imitation golds tend to be more yellow and brighter than real gold, which has a higher glossy luster and less coppery color. 2 Examine the cheap jewelry for the sowing tests. Look for places where the metal reflects light with a more silver or no shine at all. Also look for dark spots where the gold plating may have rubbed to reveal a dark, opaque metal.
3 Look for a stamp. All metal is legally sold as gold in the USA. it has a stamp that indicates its number of carats, which indicates the purity of the gold; 100-percent pure gold is generally impractical due to the softness of the metal. Some fakes carry this stamp too, but this is only true in the case of intentional counterfeiting instead of honest fancy jewelry. Therefore, this seal is a strong indicator that jewelry is probably real gold. If you do not find a seal, make sure that the cheap fashion jewelry is not missing any piece that could have contained, before assuming the piece is a fake.
4 Use a nitric acid test, which is an effective way to eliminate many imitations. When exposed to nitric acid, more fake golds darken.
